Quake Hits Southern Iran Near Oil Port

TEHRAN, Sept 10 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck southern Iran on Wednesday near Bandar Abbas, site of a major Iranian oil refinery, killing at least three people and injuring 22, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Service said the quake's magnitude was 6.1 and it struck at 1100 GMT about 53 km (33 miles) west-southwest of Bandar Abbas at a depth of 34.6 miles (55 km).

Yasser Hazbavi, the head of Hormuzgan province's disaster headquarters, told Reuters at least three people were killed and 22 injured. Iranian state television quoted a Red Crescent official as saying rescue workers were searching for casualties.

It said 15 people were injured on Qeshm, an island in the southern Gulf close to where the tremor struck.

Iranian reports variously described the quake as 6.0 and 7.5 on the Richter scale.

"So far, no damage has been reported from the 6.0 Richter scale earthquake which occurred at 3.30 p.m (1100 GMT) for 30 seconds," ISNA news agency reported, quoting a local official. The agency later said the quake cut power on Qeshm.

Magnitude 6 quakes are capable of causing severe damage.

Bandar Abbas is a major Iranian port with oil installations including a refinery. Iran is the world's fourth largest oil exporter and an industry official told Reuters last month that Bandar Abbas was processing 320,000 barrels per day of crude.

PANIC

An Interior Ministry official told Reuters the quake was centred on Bander-e Khamir in the south of the country. "It might have damaged old parts of the place," the official said.

State radio reported people ran panicking into the streets.

A resident of Qeshm island told Reuters he had heard that some homes in villages around the area had been damaged. He had not heard of major damage in big urban areas.

Residents in the United Arab Emirates, across the Gulf from Iran, reported feeling a slight tremor. Bankers and office workers evacuated buildings in Dubai, eyewitnesses said.

A number of seismological fault lines cross Iran. In 2003, about 31,000 people were killed when a tremor struck the historic city of Bam, 1,000 km (600 miles) southeast of Tehran.

In March 2006, a magnitude 6.0 quake with aftershocks struck the same province of Hormuzgan in southern Iran, causing only minor damage. In 2005, a 5.9 on the Richter scale quake hit Qeshm island in the Gulf, killing 10 and injuring 50 people.

Magnitude 7 Earthquake Hits Northern Japan

A magnitude 7 earthquake hit northern Japan on Thursday morning, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The agency said the quake hit at 9:21 a.m. off the eastern coast Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island at a depth of about 12 miles.

A warning was issued for a 20-inch tsunami along the eastern coast of Hokkaido and the northeastern coast of Japan's main island of Honshu. Authorities ordered people to stay away from beaches.

National broadcaster NHK showed footage of the coastal area, but there did not appear to be any damage. The report said the force of the quake had not broken windows or knocked items from shelves.

I had done some research last March on earthquakes on the US Govt. earthquake web site for a sermon. Obviously, God lead me to do this. Here are my findings as I have kept up with this since then, when you scroll down to 2007 you’ll understand why! The majority of earthquakes last year were around the “circle of fire.”

I have this chart in the chapel and I update it every Sunday. If I forget the patients ask me where it is! I am so humbled by the it. If you remember in 1997 there was a prophecy (I forgot from who unfortunately) that said something would take place that would change the course of the world. The only thing that happened on that day was an earthquake 400 miles below the surface. I remember thinking, well, that something. If you look at the chart you can see the words of that prophecy. In fact, when I heard about it later on the radio, they said it was the worst earthquake we’ve ever had, because it loosened all the above plates.
