Principle Of Momentum
Michael Scantlebury

As we continue our press for the "Move of God" in every territory, one of the things that we must focus on is the whole issue of momentum. Momentum is both the ability and the power of going forward. In our case, it is the tenacious advance of spiritual activity that crushes all opposition in its way. This kind of momentum can certainly destroy discouragement and unbelief; it never looks back for very long and it is always anticipating the next encounter along the way and sensing the next victory. Please understand momentum affects the quality of our thinking, and this kind of "Spiritual Momentum" prospers in a mental environment of success.

Today we want to look at three examples in the word of God about this awesome dimension that we are called to walk in. First we want to briefly look at Gideon:

As we read the book of Judges chapters 6 – 8

We see the Midianities oppressing Israel to the point that they were greatly impoverished Judges 6: 6.

God then sends them a prophet who encourages and rebukes them. God then sets out to send a deliverer to them, so He appears to Gideon Judges 6: 11 and begins the processing of preparing this man to deliver Israel.

As we read through we see all the stuff that he went through until he finally comes to the place of confidence and he sets out to conquer the Midianities. They go through some rigorous training that whittles down an army of thirty two thousand (32,000) Jud: 7: 3 to just three hundred men (300) in verse 7.

These three hundred men then go on to rout the Midianities, but something very significant happened that we want to focus on in Jud: 8: 4 "When Gideon came to the Jordan, he and the three hundred men who were with him crossed over, exhausted but still in pursuit". This right here is the awesome power of Momentum, what a tremendous account these men did not regard their tiredness because the gained a momentum and could not cease until the job was completed.

As we read through the life of Gideon there are some nuggets of truth about Leadership that we can extract from his life. Gideon’s life portrays a tremendous quality of true Godly Leadership, which is HUMILITY, but there are at least seven more dimensions, which are:

An unwillingness to lead unless God calls first (Judges 6: 36 – 40)

Dependence on God at every turn (Judges 7: 1 – 8)

A willingness to turn "Faith" in "Action" (Judges 6: 25 – 27; 7: 15 – 22)

A willingness to lead by example (Judges 7: 17)

He gave the glory to God before and after his victory (Judges 7: 15; 8: 23)

He humbly gave credit to others that belonged to him (Judges 8: 1 – 3)

He refused to step into that which God had not called him, even though he had tremendous opportunity to build a dynasty for himself (Judges 8: 22 – 23)

Second we want to look at Joshua

As we explore the dimensions and realities of this tremendous ancestor of ours, we can draw powerful principles and examples from his life. However today we extract the principle of "Momentum". This man came up under Moses and was an excellent servant to the prophet of God, until Moses died and God gave to Joshua the leadership of Israel.

In the book of Joshua we see him leading the Israelites against Jericho (chapter 6) and Ai (chapter 8) and completely routing them.

We arrive in chapter 10 and we see a demonic alliance formed with the five kings of the Amorites Joshua 10: 5 against the Gibeonites, friends of Israel. A cry for help goes out and Joshua responds, however he does something that will not be accepted by today’s armies, as a matter of fact it was not wise military strategy; (verse 9) They attacked the Amorites after having marched all night from Gilgal.

We then see that awesome account of a man completely possessed with momentum, that he calls on God to stop the sun from setting and the moon from rising, "till the people had revenge upon their enemies" (verse 13). And of course God answered his prayer and they routed the enemy with the sword.

Read Joshua 10: 19 – 27 and see the end of this tremendous account, for it was not until they completely destroyed the five kings did the sun go down.

And third we want to take a brief look at the life of Jesus. He had tremendous momentum; as a matter of fact He lived for three and a half years in "divine momentum"

Examples:

John 4: 32 – 38; John 19: 28 – 30

Luke 22: 42 – 44

Please note that the enemy will always try to slow down or stop your momentum, but we must respond quickly and decisively against any such attacks; for example: -

The Hezekiah example:

2 Kings 18 & 19 (especially 19: 3 – 8 & 19: 20)

The Ezra example: (Maintaining momentum with the prophetic word)

Ezra 4: 23 – 24

Ezra 5: 1 – 2; 6: 14

The Nehemiah example:

Nehemiah 4: 1 – 3; 7 – 8 (the enemy’s threat)

Nehemiah 4: 4 – 5; 9 – 23 (Nehemiah’s response)

Another demonic attack: Nehemiah 6: 1 - 2; 5 – 9

Nehemiah’s response: Nehemiah 6: 3; 11 - 12

Saints, as we continue in this awesome task that has been assigned to us by the Lord, let us press the momentum, by our lifestyle, our commitment, our dedication, our focus, our victorious mentalities, our resources, not loving our lives to the end so that we may finish what we have been called to accomplish. We can assist in changing the face of the North American church. I urge you live in the place of the constant press, do not settle for the status quo, rise above the present system and connect to the higher purpose in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3: 12 – 14).

As I write this I cannot help but declare to you that we are entering into a season of divine favour, which will see us accomplishing much in God. There is such a tremendous sense of breakthrough in my spirit; it is as if a new day has dawned upon that which we have stepped out to do in the Lord. I encourage you to feel; but also enter into, the excitement that has been released. We will not see, in our generation, a time that is more favorable to the Advance of God’s Kingdom, as we currently have. Ergo, we need to seize the moment and step into this "Divine Momentum"
