Day of Atonement

A message from Jerusalem on the Day of Atonement
Jane Clark

As I write this the streets of Jerusalem around us are empty of all but pedestrians. On this special day all Jews who are serious about their relationship with God fast and pray the whole day, beating their breasts and weighing the balances of their good and bad deeds, hoping to have their names put in the Book of Life for one more year. It is a visual reminder of our need for repentance and for the atonement of the blood of Christ, for "All have gone astray and have turned every one to his own way" Isaiah 53.

Repentance is on God's heart, for He longs that we should not be burnt with the fire of His of coming judgement, but have the fire of His love burning in our hearts.

The fire of love falls on living sacrifices who are yielding all to him. Sacrifices belong on altars. In the Messianic Congregation service last Sabbath at Christchurch in the Old City a Zimbabwean brother spoke of repairing our altars: the personal, family and Church altars. He explained how a good personal altar is the foundation for the family, and the family for the Church one. This word really burned in my heart and here is what I think God is saying to us.

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: "Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?"
15 He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil:
16 He will dwell on high; His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; Bread will be given him, His water will be sure. Isa 33:14-16
Repair your altars, make haste, the time is short, for I am increasing the shaking of the world, extending it to those places that feel themselves secure, as well as in my nation Israel. Be prepared, for trouble shall creep up unexpectedly and overtake you. Rebuild your altars so the fire of my love can fall upon you and you will be a light to all those who are in despair and darkness all around you.

Remember My promises: I am coming to all who will listen and speaking words of comfort and security: store them in your heart as you would hoard food for the day of famine, for these words will indeed be very life to you.
