A message from Jerusalem on the Day of Atonement
Jane Clark
As I write this the streets of Jerusalem around us are empty of all but pedestrians. On this special day all Jews who are serious about their relationship with God fast and pray the whole day, beating their breasts and weighing the balances of their good and bad deeds, hoping to have their names put in the Book of Life for one more year. It is a visual reminder of our need for repentance and for the atonement of the blood of Christ, for "All have gone astray and have turned every one to his own way" Isaiah 53.
Repentance is on God's heart, for He longs that we should not be burnt with the fire of His of coming judgement, but have the fire of His love burning in our hearts.
The fire of love falls on living sacrifices who are yielding all to him. Sacrifices belong on altars. In the Messianic Congregation service last Sabbath at Christchurch in the Old City a Zimbabwean brother spoke of repairing our altars: the personal, family and Church altars. He explained how a good personal altar is the foundation for the family, and the family for the Church one. This word really burned in my heart and here is what I think God is saying to us.
Remember My promises: I am coming to all who will listen and speaking words of comfort and security: store them in your heart as you would hoard food for the day of famine, for these words will indeed be very life to you.
