There is a great error being propagated in the church concerning the Fatherhood of God. The idea is that because God is so good, that he always will act as a gentle Father to all because, after all, what loving Father wouldn't protect his creation? And these things in themselves are true of the Lord. But like all heresy, it's only half of the story. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 11:22,
Jesus is Savior but also Judge. The Lamb of God came first as a sacrifice but shall return with his armies as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah to execute vengeance. According to Revelation 19:15, "From his mouth issues a sharp sword with which to smite the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron; he will tread the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty."
Jesus, meek and mild, is also the same Jesus who will evoke this response in Revelation 6:16 from terrified "Men (who) will call to the mountains and rocks, 'Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.'"
We are entering times of judgment on this planet. Everywhere I go I hear the saints of God telling me the same things: get your house in order, prepare for the coming judgment of God, seek the Lord while he may be found. There is a holy fear rising up in the church as God begins to cull a godly remnant out of His compromised, backslidden people. We are entering the days when the wrath of God shall be revealed against ungodly men.
There are three troubling verses about hail in Revelation that the Spirit of God has unlocked for me. They are:
Revelation 11:19 "Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple; and there were flashes of lightning, voices, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail."
Revelation 16:21 "Great hailstones, heavy as a hundred-weight, dropped on men from heaven, till men cursed God for the plague of the hail, so fearful was that plague."
By his own executive order, He will execute capital punishment and stone to death the sinners of the earth!
Remember the story of the woman caught in adultery? The Law demanded that she be stoned to death. When the crowd drug her before Jesus in John 8:7. "He stood up and said to them, 'Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.'" The crowd finally dissipated because they all had harbored sin in their hearts.
When the Lord, the righteous judge, begins to rain hail upon the earth, the One who is WITHOUT sin shall indeed cast the first stone. Under Levitical Law, there had to be two corroborating witnesses for a thing to be established. And when someone was sentenced to death, the first witness had to throw the first stone at the accused, and then the crowd finished the stoning when the sinner died.
Remember, according to Proverbs 14:5, "A faithful witness does not lie," and Revelation 1:5 states that, "Jesus Christ (is) the faithful witness." He alone can execute judgment in righteousness, and he alone can pronounce a death sentence and hurl the first stone. And that is why he will use a plague of monstrous hailstones, to literally stone to death the hardened sinners of the earth who refuse to repent.
Stoning is not a New Testament practice for the church because in His unfolding revelation, God reveals that he alone is capable of judging to death. He didn't quit being a holy and righteous God when He revealed His love to us. Indeed, His kindness is meant to lead us to repentance. These passages in Revelation have to do with the final days of wrath of both God and Satan. God is going to take the gloves off, and deal ruthlessly with sin and those who love it's darkness. He is going to use this terrifying plague of hail to stone sinners to death. Will they repent? Like Pharaoh, when the plague of hail bombed Egypt into ruins, they will harden their hearts all the more, "Men cursed God for the plague of the hail."
God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. When there is willful sin, and men reject the abounding tender mercies of God, and finally say "no" to His grace, there remains only certain judgment.
I find it interesting the Law of God was written on two tablets of stone. Jesus is called the Chief Cornerstone. The theme of stone and God's revealed moral law run throughout scripture. He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.
God's wrath was once poured at Calvary where he judged His innocent Son for the sins of the world. All who believe on Him are then pardoned and wrath is taken away.
God is patiently calling men to himself. Many will repent and be saved while others go on in their sin storing up wrath for themselves both in this life and the next. God counsels us in Zephaniah 3:8,
Soberly,
