SET FREE TO SERVE

In March of 1948, from the deck of the U.S.S. Washington, I saw the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. The long journey over rough seas between Great Britain and the United states had finally become the reality of what my daddy had told me about. The past of the war torn years were behind us and we would have a better life in America.

Little did I know as a small child that my liberty and freedom were not in the Lady of New York Harbor, but in the Lord.

"Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (2 Cor. 3:17b). Exactly what is liberty for the believer. In doing a cross search for other verses of this particular word I found that this word is used to contrast between being free and being a slave. I believe that we can safely say that if the Spirit of God is present, then no believer is to be held in captivity. Yet we so often find ourselves bound as if we were indeed in chains. Most of what keeps us in bondage is our ignorance to the Truth. Let me define ignorance. . . I certainly don’t mean stupidity. Ignorance simply means uninformed of facts pertinent to the issue. Jesus said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free." John 8:32. Before you know the Truth, you are in ignorance. But once you know the Truth (being Jesus Christ Himself), you are free.

"If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed." (John 8:36)

It is when we begin to let the Person of Jesus into every area of our lives, we come to know Him more and more for who is really is. He reveals to us those things in us that we need to let go of and be set free from. We will find ourselves experiencing the liberty that was bought and paid for at Calvary in ways that will release the power of the Holy Spirit in us for the sake of others. That is our calling. He set us free from the bondage of sin and death, the curses of iniquity in our family lines, and every religious tradition the enemy has created in the church to hold back the power of the Holy Spirit given to the church. Beloved, are you ignorant of your inheritance today? Are you living in Spiritual poverty? Is your testimony effective to the unsaved? Are you flowing freely in your giftings and callings of the Most High God?

One of the most freeing, yet compelling truths I have come to know is found in 1 Peter 2:11-16

"Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men–as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bond-servants of God."

The only place of freedom is in complete submission to the Lord. God is looking for a people with servant hearts. Those who know they are His, yet know that there are called to serve. Those who by their very lives, reflect the character of Christ in all that they say and do to everyone they meet.

Resolve with me daily that you will not only live in the Spirit, but that you will walk in the Spirit and experience the liberty of God to fulfill your calling
